  • Water yard only when necessary. Most of the year, lawns need only 1 inch of water per week. Install a rain gauge to keep track of the amount of rain in your yard. (Uses 10 gallons per minute)
  • Turn off the water while brushing teeth or shaving. (Uses 2.5 gallons per minute)
  • Wash only full loads of laundry in the washing machine. Running the machine when it is full will save time, energy and water. (Uses 35 gallons per load)
  • If bathing in a tub, take shallow baths. Decrease time spent bathing if using a shower. (Uses 36 gallons per tub full)
  • Wash only full loads of dishes in a dishwasher. If washing by hand, do not let water run while washing and rinsing dishes. (Uses 13 gallons per load)
  • Avoid using the toilet as a wastebasket. Tissues and other things belong in the trashcan, not in the toilet. (Uses 3.5 gallons per flush)
  • Do not hose down sidewalks and driveways. Use a broom or a leaf blower. (Uses 8 gallons per minute)
  • A garbage disposal requires a lot of water to operate properly. Only use a garbage disposal when necessary. (Uses 2 gallons per use)
  • When washing your car, use a water cut-off device such as a water nozzle that shuts off when not in use. (Uses 8 gallons per minute)
  • When planting new plants, use native and drought tolerant plants that do not require as much water.
  • Install rain sensors to avoid irrigating during or after a rain event.
