Membership: The Planning and Zoning Commission consists of five members who are appointed by the City Commission to serve three-year terms. Board members must be residents of the City and shall not serve at the same time on any other City board. 

General Functions: The Planning and Zoning Commission advises and makes recommendations to the City Commission regarding applications for amendments to the Official Zoning Map and requests for Conditional Uses or other special designations on property within the City. It obtains and maintains information on population, property values, the land economy, land use and other information necessary to assess the amount, direction and type of development to be expected in the City. At the request of the Planning Director or Building Official, the Commission interprets and determines the intent of provisions of this Code that are unclear or in conflict with other regulations and considers the need for revision or addition of regulations in the Unified Land Development Code and recommend changes to the City Commission.

The Planning and Zoning Commission also serves as the Local Planning Agency for the City of Bartow pursuant to the Local Government Comprehensive Planning and Land Development Regulation Act, Ch. 163, Part II, Florida Statutes, and perform all functions and duties prescribed in the statute. As the Local Planning Agency, the Board coordinates the comprehensive planning program and prepares the comprehensive plan or elements or portion thereof for the City of Bartow; ensures the City’s comprehensive plan is consistent with the comprehensive plans of other appropriate local governments and the State of Florida, recommend amendments to the comprehensive plan to the City Commission for adoption, monitors the effectiveness and status of the comprehensive plan and provide recommended changes to the City Commission as needed; and consider whether proposed development orders are consistent with the goals, objectives and policies of the comprehensive plan.

Meeting Schedules: The Planning and Zoning Commission meets on the fourth Monday of any given month provided there are items that need reviewed.  The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. (EST) and is held in the City Commission Chambers, City Hall, 450 North Wilson Avenue.  Meeting dates are subject to change and additional meetings may be added if necessary.
