Fire Dept Application 

A position with the fire department requires shift work (including weekends and holidays).  You will be required to work on a rotating shift which consists of twenty four hours on duty followed by forty eight hours off duty, along with a kelly day every third week.

The City of Bartow Fire Department has a long rich history and tradition.  The fire department not only protects its citizens and visitors, it also has the unique responsibility of providing protection to all of the state and local government buildings within the city.

Step Program

  • Fire Driver 15 year salary step plan ranging from $38,794 to $57,556
  • Lieutenant 7 year salary step plan ranging from $60,434 to $70,085

Vacations and Sick Time

First 5 years of continuous service 96 hours per year
5 to 10 years of continuous service 144 hours per year 
 10 to 15 years of continuous service 172.8 hours per year 
 15 years and beyond of continuous service 192 hours per year 

 

Sick time shall be earned at the rate of nine and six tenths hours (9.6 hours) per month beginning with the date of hire.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current State of Florida drivers license.
  • Birth certificate issued by state.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Copy of State of Florida certificate of compliance.
  • Copy of State of Florida EMT or Paramedic license.
  • Current CPR card.
  • Florida Emergency Vehicle Operator Course.

 Disqualifications

  • Any criminal charge that would result in the Florida Department of Law Enforcement removing a candidates privilege to be a State of Florida Firefighter per chapter 633 of the Florida Statutes.
  • Any charge of DUI of alcohol or controlled substances within the past seven years.
  • Any two charges of DUI of alcohol or controlled substances with no time limit.
  • Any reckless driving within the past seven years.
  • Any two charges of reckless driving with no time limit.
  • Any drivers license suspensions for any reasons in the past five years.
  • Any two drivers license suspensions with no time limit.
  • Any accumulation of nine points or more points on the license in the past three years.
  • Any accumulation of fifteen points or more on the license in the past five years.
  • Any application found to contain any false statements will be grounds for automatic disqualifications of candidate.

 Pre-Employment

  • Criminal background investigation and reference checks.
  • Oral interview.
  • Urinalysis examination.
  • Physical examination and EKG.
  • Psychological evaluation.
