What is Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)?

Hazardous waste is anything that is corrosive, toxic, reactive, or explosive when mixed with other chemicals. Examples :

 • In the house: Insecticides, furniture polish and metal polish with solvent, batteries:Ni-Cd, Lithium, zinc air, and rechargeable batteries.

In the garage or shed: Car fluids, motor oils, batteries, fuels, kerosene, tires, and paint.

Not Hazardous: AAA, AA, C, D, 6-volt, and 9-volt batteries: Since 1993, battery manufacturer s have no longer add mercury to alkaline batteries used in most electronics today. AAA, AA, C, D, 6-volt, and 9-volt batteries are no longer classified as hazardous. This means any alkaline battery made after 1993 does not pose a threat to our environment. You may dispose of these with your regular household garbage, placing them in your green cart.

For immediate disposal: HHW  is accepted at the Polk County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, 10 Environmental Loop South, Winter Haven, FL 33880, off Winter Lake Rd. For directions call Polk County Waste and Recycling at 863-284-4319.
